About

History of the Weighing Industry Association of Australia (W.I.A.A.)

The W.I.A.A. was formed on 19th July 1983 by 12 like minded weighing industry professionals. As the weighing industry is small (135 Servicing Licensees for example) compared to most other trades, these people realised the importance of banding together. 40 years on and we have become a voice for the industry. We have regular discussions and cosultations with National Measurement Institute (the Federal Government body that oversees and regulates Weights & Measures in Australia). We are members of CILC (Consumer Industry Liaison Committee) and also on the steering committee for the International Conference of Weighing. There are more associations/affiliations on the way. It truly is an exciting time for the weighing industry - not just in Australia, but internationally.

What we’re doing

Aside from the above, the current board is looking to bigger colaborations nationally and internationally, which leads to sharing of knowledge. This knowledge is then of course available to all our members, helping them to understand the rules & regulations, the latest developments & trends, building stronger connections - which all in turn helps their business grow, therefore enabling to support their customers better. Being such a small industry, we often have to fend for ourselves - one such example is with training and qualifications. As an industry, we are too small to be recognised offically for T.A.F.E. as an example to offer a Cert III or Diploma course. Whilst there is an official Federal Government qualification, it only covers the verification of trade scales - just one component (and a small one at that) of our daily work. The current board is committed to change this and are currently in the process of developing our own course covering all areas of our great industry.

Benefits of being a member

By joining the W.I.A.A. you become one of over 35 members who - as one united voice - can address Government departments and associated industry groups directly regarding currrent interpretation of rules, proposed changes to the regulations. You also find out what is happening in the industry, as it happens, both in Australia and overseas.
